What Are the Procedures, Risks and Complications Involved in Kidney Transplant

What is a Kidney Transplant?

A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure to place a well-functioned kidney from a living or a deceased person into a person whose kidney no longer works efficiently. Kidneys play an important role in maintaining our bodily fluids and balancing electrolyte. A kidney transplant is considered when kidneys stop working entirely.

Procedures for a Kidney transplant

With advancements in medical science, a good surgeon can now safely implant a donated kidney into a patients body suffering from Kidney Failure. The procedure usually involves three steps :

1)     Firstly incision takes place and a cut is made in the patient’s lower abdomen so that the donated kidney can be placed in.

2)     Next, to provide the kidney with the proper amount of blood supply, nearby blood vessels are attached to the freshly donated kidneys.

3)     And finally, the ureter gets connected to the bladder.

Risks and Complication

Though kidney transplant surgery is a widely performed surgery across the globe with several people getting cured of their kidney issues through it, there are some risks associated with it.

Though this is very rare, at times the Kidney Transplant comes with a huge risk when the body rejects the donated kidney.

Apart from this sometimes blood gets clotted or infection is caused due to general anaesthesia.

There are many side effects that could arise from the surgery such as weight gain, acne, or bone thinning.

Right after the surgery, it is advised to let the doctors know if you feel any soreness near the area of the incision.
